Your all-in-one guide to planning a hell yes elopement—packed with real love stories, expert planning tips, and location guides to help you craft a day that’s wholeheartedly you.

Hey im emily & welcome to the Adventure almanac

A couple who just eloped embrace at sunset on top of a high peak in the Adirondack Mountains with a mountain backdrop.

Are you an aspiring 46er dreaming of getting married on a high peak while knocking another off your list? Or maybe you just want to be a total badass and hike something epic for your elopement day.

Maybe you’re planning a day with family first, followed by an adventure session in the Adirondack Mountains the day after.

If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone. Jess and Andrew had the same vision.

Day One: A Sunset Hike After “I Do”

Jess and Andrew got married in their hometown surrounded by family, but their hearts were set on celebrating in the mountains. They reached out originally wanting photos at a waterfall before hiking a high peak the next day.

I suggested we capture everything, not just the hike, but the entire story from start to finish. Imagine this: brunch by a waterfall with a rainbow glowing in the mist, then hiking not one, but two Adirondack High Peaks, and ending the journey with a sunset dance in their wedding attire.

They were all in.

We planned a back-to-back adventure, one day for their ceremony and sunset hike, and one full day dedicated to chasing waterfalls and summits.

After saying “I do,” Jess and Andrew hit the road toward the Adirondacks. That evening, we hiked a short trail that opened up to sweeping mountain views, and somehow ended up with the entire summit to ourselves. As the sun dropped behind the peaks, the light turned gold, and the quiet felt like magic.

Day Two: Waterfalls, High Peaks, and Sunset

The next morning, we started early, stopping for photos in a wildflower field before reaching the waterfall. The light hit perfectly, illuminating a rainbow at the base of the falls. They shared brunch on a rock by the water, laughing and soaking in the calm before the climb.

From there, we began the ascent, first summiting a peak under bright midday sun, sharing Swedish Fish (Jess’s favorite trail snack) and stories along the way.

As we traversed toward the final summit, we paused for photos on a smaller ridge with panoramic views of the Adirondack wilderness.

By the time we reached the last high peak, the air had cooled and the sky began to glow. They changed back into their wedding attire, ate ramen noodles at the ledge, and shared their first dance to a Lord of the Rings song as the golden light faded.

The sunset was dramatic, clouds shifting into wild shapes (including one that looked suspiciously like a spaceship) and it was the perfect finale to their two-day Adirondack high peak elopement. The weather during their June elopement couldn’t have been more perfect, warm days, clear skies, and that classic early-summer glow. Timing your elopement right makes all the difference in the Adirondacks. I actually have a full guide that breaks down the best seasons, weather, and trail conditions here: When to Elope in the Adirondacks.

Behind the Adventure

Along the way, I learned that Jess works for a wildlife nonprofit, she taught me all about frogs, salamanders, and other little forest critters. Andrew’s a big bird watcher and used an app to identify which birds were singing nearby.

It was the perfect combo, nature lovers, dreamers, and adventurers exploring one of the most beautiful corners of the Adirondacks together.

Tips for Planning a Two-Day Elopement in the Adirondacks

If you’re dreaming of a two-day adventure like this, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Split your timeline intentionally.

Use Day One for family, vows, or a relaxed hike. Then dedicate Day Two entirely to exploring and creating adventure-focused portraits.

2. Plan your routes carefully.

Choose hikes that allow flexibility, loops or traverses that include multiple peaks or lookouts are perfect for variety and views.

3. Pack smart.

Bring layers, headlamps, snacks, and backup gear. I always carry extras for when the unexpected happens, because it will.

4. Be ready for any weather.

The Adirondacks can throw curveballs. I create backup plans and alternative routes to make sure your experience is stress-free no matter what Mother Nature does.

5. Embrace the journey.

This isn’t about rushing from spot to spot. It’s about slowing down, breathing in mountain air, and celebrating your love in the wildest, most beautiful way possible.
